Carmen watch the opera at Masada
Hanna Drori-Kashi (09/11/2011)
Masada is becoming a regular venue for opera, following the successful productions of Nabuko and Aida – seen by more than 140,000 people. Ahead of next June's performance of Bizet's Carmen, the Israeli Opera and Arkia airlines have announced an exciting co-operation.
Bizet will be performed at the foot of the desert fortress with a backdrop of the area's beautiful scenery. The performace will be conducted by Daniel Oren and produced by Giancarlo del Monaco-Zuckerman, who are busy in Israel at the moment preparing for the show.
Arkia is the sponsor of this grand event and is selling all package tickets in Israel, at discounted prices. It will also re-introduce its flights from the centre of Israel to the Dead Sea.
Arkia officials and Israeli Tourism Minister Stas Mezhnikov hope that reintroducing the route and having another fantastic opera at Masada will enhance the Dead Sea's growing reputation as a travel destination, just as it is vying to become one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World.

While the views of Massada are outstanding, it is scohking and sad to see what has happend to the Dead Sea. When i first came to Israel in 1974, the sea filled much of the area that is now dry barren ground. In 5 years or so, there probably won\'t be any water left at all!
