Peres Meets Churchill's Granddaughter

Sandys, a world-renowned sculptor, is currently visiting Israel as a guest of the Ministry of Information and Diaspora Affairs, scouting a location for a new sculpture she is working on.

At the meeting, Peres said to Sandys, “We are glad to see you. Churchill, for us, is a statesman who made a breakthrough in human history. The Jewish people owe a great debt to your grandfather for the historical path he was instrumental in entrenching. Our nation is truly grateful to your family.”

Sandys responded to the president that her grandfather’s political life was not easy, to which Peres replied that “all who swim against the tide face difficulties, your Grandfather swam against the tide and won. The name of Churchill is heard and remembered through history, and his words echo in every place.”

Peres shared his impressions of the effect that meeting Churchill had on David Ben-Gurion, promising to find a touching letter that was written to him after their meeting.

Sandys presented the president with a book of her work, and Peres praised her plan to bring her sculpture to Israel.
