The game was a defensive one by manager Claude Puel׳s Southampton team until Maor Buzaglo give Hapoel the lead, when from the edge of the box, with 12 minutes to go from the end of the match he sent the ball to the back of the Saint׳s net.

The Saints were forced to fight back and in stoppage time Virgil van Dijk finally managed to get a lucky equaliser, but the 1-1 draw was all that The Camels needed to take them through, for the first time, to the second stage of a European competition and the draw on Monday of the Europa League last 32. Truly a historic first for manager Barak Bakhar׳s team.

Unfortunately not such a good night for Maccabi Tel Aviv who despite a 2-1 victory over the Irish side, Dundalk at the Netanya Stadium failed to qualify in their UEFA Europa League Group stage. Sadly for Maccabi, in Holland the Dutch side, AK Alkmaar’s 3-2 defeat of the Russian group leaders Zenit St Petersberg at the AFAS Stadion ensuring that Maccabi Tel Aviv were out of the Europa League, this time round.
