Dana Levy is a British Israeli film critic based in London.

‘My Cousin Rachel’ is the screen adaptation of Daphne du Maurier’s book of the same name, and it tells the story of a young and naive English bachelor named Phillip (Played by Sam Claflin of ‘The Hunger Games’ series and ‘Me before you’) who was orphaned at a young age and brought up by Ambrose, his kind and wealthy cousin.

One day, Philip starts receiving letters from Ambrose telling him that his wife Rachel (Rachel Weisz, most recently seen in ‘Denial’ and ‘The Light Between Oceans’) may be poisoning him and dies suddenly under mysterious circumstances.

Phillip is convinced Rachel has killed him and plots revenge against her, but when Rachel visits the estate of her late husband, she doesn’t fit the poisonous cold-blooded murderer that Ambrose claimed she was. Philip is pushed into turmoil as he finds himself falling in love with his former guardian’s widow.

Weisz is spectacular and mesmerizing as the mysterious Rachel. Her powers of seduction border hypnosis, and her beauty, charm and sophistication, while not overtly sexual, overwhelms both Phillip and the audience.

Sam Claflin is convincing as the naive Philip, whose transformation into a possessive and jealous figure over Rachel and her bohemian lifestyle is similarly convincing.

Holliday Grainger (of ‘Cinderella’ and ‘Jane Eyre’) is also notable as Philip’s childhood friend Louise, who holds a quiet yet simmering flame for Philip and is tormented watching him do foolish things to impress Rachel.

‘My Cousin Rachel’ is a dark, mysterious, thrilling and clever film. You will spend the whole viewing in suspense- guessing, searching for the truth and changing your mind a few times over as to whether Rachel really is the evil gold digger she is accused of being. The suspense will keep you gripped to the very end.

When du Maurier’s book was published in 1951, it instantly became one of her most popular. The original film, released in 1952 and starring Richard Burton and Olivia De Havilland, received four Oscar® nominations and a Golden Globe Award. Burton was hailed as the “New star of the year.”
