The usual summer blockbuster movies are well under way but one that truly shines thus far is ‘Baby Driver’.

Ansel Elgort (‘The fault in our stars’, ‘Divergent’ and ‘Insurgent’) stars as Baby, a talented yet reluctant getaway driver, who is forced to do so for crime boss Doc (played by Kevin Spacey from ‘House of Cards’) until he pays off a debt from his past.

Baby is ordered to drive for Buddy (Jon Hamm, from ‘Mad Men’), his girlfriend and partner in crime Darling (Eiza Gonzalez, best known for ‘From Dusk ‘til Dawn: The Series’) and Bats (Jamie Foxx, from ‘Django Unchained’ and ‘Ray’) to execute bank heists. Baby’s personal life is a world away from his life as a getaway driver– he looks after his elderly deaf and disabled foster father and spends his time making playlists, mixing songs with samples from conversations he has had.

Baby’s past plays a crucial role in the story. As a child he was involved in a car crash which left him an orphan with tinnitus forcing him to constantly play music to drown out the ringing in his ears. As a result he is never without his earphones and several i-pods at any one time, which is the perfect recipe for a brilliant eclectic soundtrack to the film. Baby’s music selection includes legendary tracks such as ‘Easy’ by the Commodores, ‘Harlem Shuffle’ and ‘Sabotage’ by the Beastie Boys.

Just before finishing paying off his debt to Doc, Baby meets and falls in love with Deborah (Lily James from ‘Downton Abbey’ and ‘Cinderella’), a waitress who works in the diner he regularly visits. As their love story develops, his dark secret becomes more complicated and dangerous.

Ansel Elgort is definitely one to watch. A DJ, singer and actor who has the looks of a young Marlon Brando- he plays Baby to perfection. Occasionally timeless and innocent in the diner scenes with Deborah, as if stepping out of another era ... yet the minute Baby is behind the wheel he becomes a contemporary action hero. There are brilliantly choreographed car chase scenes, which are in sync with the music and keep you on the edge of your seat throughout.

If you are after a great summer action film with a mind blowing soundtrack, then ‘Baby Driver’ will take you on a great ride.
