Prime Minister Theresa May has called for an independent investigation into the sexist, racist and anti-Semitic intimidation of parliamentary candidates that took place in the run-up to the June 8 election.

May has asked the Committee of Standards in Public Life to look into the abuse faced by MPs after both Tory and Labour parliamentarians received death threats online and other forms of abuse.

The Prime Minister’s concerns were triggered by a report from the All Party Parliamentary Group on Antisemitism on the 2017 General Election, which found that personal attacks against MPs are on the rise.

One notable attack was against former Tory MP Andrew Percy, who had been called “Zionist scum” after converting to Judaism.

May said she was “horrified” by the report’s findings, adding: “Robust debate is a vital part of our democracy, but there can be no place for the shocking threats and abuse we have seen in recent months.

“We must all work together to banish this behavior, and I would urge MPs and candidates from all parties to report their experiences to this review so we get the fullest possible picture- and can take the action required to stamp it out”, she said.

While the inquiry will be all-party, the debate of who is most responsible for the rise in personal attacks rages on.

Conservative MP Simon Hart called out leader of the opposition Jeremy Corbyn in Westminster Hall on Wednesday for his inaction, saying: “Rather than just putting out feeble messages online saying you condemn all this, Jeremy Corbyn needs to actually do something about it.”

A spokesperson for Jeremy Corbyn fired back: “Jeremy has always condemned abuse and personal attacks and never engages in them.

“The Conservative campaign was negative, nasty and full of smears and untruths. Labour fought a positive, hopeful campaign based on policies to transform Britain for the many not the few.”
