Detroit is the latest directorial release from Kathryn Bigelow (‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘Zero Dark Thirty’).

Set in the Summer of 1967, when the United States of America was beset by social and political unrest, racial repression and injustice ripped the city of Detroit apart.

The story focuses on little known yet shocking events that took place at the Algiers motel in Detroit. Two nights after the Detroit rebellion began the Detroit Police Department, the Michigan State Police, the Michigan Army National Guard and a local private security guard were alerted to a report of gunshots coming from the vicinity of a National Guard staging area. The officers were then ordered to search and seize an annex of the nearby Algiers Motel.

When the policemen arrived at the motel they discovered two white women, who they presumed were prostitutes, partying with a group of black men. Several white policemen interrogated the men by lining them up against the wall and playing a ‘Death game’ to intimidate them into confessing to the alleged shooting. Many of the guests were brutally beaten and three of the unarmed men were shot dead. The aftermath of the events that took place at the hotel that night is as traumatic as the night itself.

Detroit is a tension building thriller and as the story develops and the characters intertwine, the story becomes clearer and increasingly more shocking, claustrophobic and terrifying.

It is shot with Kathryn Bigelow’s signature cinema veritי filmic approach which captures every movement and adds a more realistic documentary style feel to the film. It also features original footage of the rebellion which adds authenticity to the film. It is packed with a very eclectic, interesting and convincing cast including John Boyega (‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’), Will Poulter (‘Son of Rambow’ and ‘The Revenant’), Anthony Mackie (‘The Hurt Locker’, Jack Reynor (‘A Royal Night Out’), John Krasinski (The US version of ‘The Office’ and ‘13 Hours’), and Hannah Murray (‘Skins’ and ‘Game of Thrones’).

Detroit is not an easy watch and not for the faint hearted but it’s an eye opening and haunting history lesson that shouldn’t be missed.
