A brand new Boeing 757 Dreamliner powered by Rolls Royce engines arrived on El Al’s doorstep at Ben Gurion Airport on Wednesday, marking the first transaction in the biggest ever trade deal between Israel and the UK.

The aircraft, which can up to 335 passengers with 20% improved fuel efficiency than the Boeing 767, is the first 16 that El Al purchased from Boeing in March 2016. The deal was paired with a long-term agreement with Rolls Royce that ensured that each El Al Dreamliner would be powered by Trent 1000 engines.

The £1 billion deal was the “biggest ever export deal to Israel” according to UK Ambassador to Israel David Quarrey, who said the purchase reflected “the strength of the commercial ties between Britain and Israel.”
The new aircraft are also a game changer for El Al, which was in need of reenergizing its aging fleet.

Barry Grossman, the director of trade and investment at the British embassy in Israel, said at the welcoming ceremony at Ben Gurion: “It’s historic in the sense that El Al is really getting a brand new fleet, in the sense that the aircraft will have the best engines in world…”

Air travel options for Israelis have come a long way since the days of the Piper Cub.

“It was a very special occasion and I was very proud to be there”, added Grossman.

A spokesperson from Rolls Royce also remarked on the significance of the deal: “Delivering these engines marks an important milestone in our relationship with El Al that dates back more than 60 years. During that time we’ve powered a rang of aircraft for El Al including the Boeing 707, Boeing’s first airliner.”

During Wednesday’s welcoming ceremony that drew thousands of onlookers, Alistair Burt, the UK Minister for the Middle East and North Africa, said: “We have a longstanding relationship with Israel and I have witnessed first-hand the strength of this partnership in many areas from trade to investment to technology and innovation.

“This relationship will continue to grow and benefit both of our nations.”

The newest member of El Al’s fleet will begin to fly to Europe and North America in September, before adding long-haul routes.
